so, what, you want me to drop my drawers?
So I go to get smokes this evening from the store down my street. The guy running the register has sold to me before, no problems. Today, after verifying my age and telling me the total, he decides to card me. Again, this is AFTER he had almost completed the sale, too late to card by company standards. So I hand him my driver's license, and he then starts throwing a fit because it says "F". The store wasn't empty and I really didn't feel comfortable sharing with half the neighbourhood why it stated that, so I offered another form of ID and to take off my hat. He asked, when I told him it was mine, "So are you a woman, sir?" That and showing my ID to the line is what sent me over the top.

So, I get to call my corporate headquarters tomorrow. YAY!

Unbelievable jerk cashier.

Hmm I work retail and have two things to say about this. First its HORRIBLY embarrasing to be outed that way, I feel for you. Under his companies policy he is most likely not allowed to share your personal info with customers. Whether that means drivers license, credit card, check, etc...

Second, Until the clerk cashes out the sale it is not too late to card. I work in a grocery environment and I cannot tell you how many times we get fraudulent people, underage kids, and trans people who generally raise your level of suspicion about the card and user. However there are polite ways of saying, excuse me do you have additional ID? Or I need to get this approved by my manager because this does not resemble you or I have a question about the authenticity of the ID. I am always respectful of my customers and in return believe that their private business is their own unless I actually have proof their is fraud involved. This way they do not feel like I am providing poor service or outing them. Many people are grateful that I am thorough in the age of mass identity theft.

Have you considered getting a small card/ID badge that is signed by your MD or therapist and briefly explains that you are trans in the event you are carded, pulled over, etc? You can find many examples on the MTF trans websites and they claim it is very useful to have medical proof of the GID diagnoses as opposed to being accused of fraud and whatnot by clerks or police.
